Be Mine!

Heather and I have been feeling the love from all the wonderful visitors who have left us the loveliest comments! Wow, thank you ladies! It is so encouraging to read your comments everyday! We decided to play a game and make cards that we could enter into as many challenges as possible. I think you’ll see, we did pretty well on that score! We actually could have entered them into more challenges, but we decided to spread the fun out a bit by making more cards. So, expect to see a couple more in the coming days!

I just want to say a thank you to all the challenge hostesses, design team members, and prize sponsors who work hard to make the challenges happen. I appreciate all the efforts that you put out in order to make it fun for us! I also want to thank all the challenge hostesses who allow us to combine as many challenges as we want to or can. You rock!

Here is my card. This was such a blast to make and I just love it! What an opportunity to break out all the embellishments and just have a party with it! There are mulberry flowers, round and heart gems (my favorite!), and antique buttons from my mother’s button jar. I’m going to have to use more tags in future designs, they’re fun.

Here is Heather’s card. She used an old brass embossing plate for the heart and trimmed around it. The lace was cut on a Fiskar’s punch. She cut out the circles with a Martha Stewart circle cutter then trimmed around the black one with scallop scissors(!). There is a brad under the bow that attaches the front and back of the card so it swivels open.  Heather couldn’t resist putting the dragonfly and bling on there as these are two of her favorite things. We just love these House Mouse stamps. Isn’t that little guy adorable?

For the Boys

Wanted to share a couple masculine cards we just finished. It can be a real challenge to make cards for men. We had fun with the challenge!

My older son’s birthday is coming up so I made this one especially for him. I upcycled the wolf image from an old commercial card, mounted on a Spellbinders die cut oval. The sentiment is a digi from Create with TLC. Don’t you love the letter brads?

We are lucky to live in a very rural area, on 37 acres of forestland. We frequently see wildlife out our windows. This is a little mama deer that showed up in our side yard with her baby and a couple other does yesterday afternoon. They were nibbling moss off branches that blew down in the windstorm we had last week. I tried for a picture of all of them but ”mama” was feeling just a bit shy.

In keeping with the wildlife around our home, Heather finished her side step masculine card. I just love how it turned out! Isn’t the font on the sentiment perfect for the feel of this card? She made great use of the step design to build a 3-D scene, I think. Here’s the tutorial for the side step card: http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/resources/tutorials/sidestepcard/

Here’s one I think could work for a man or a woman. I loved playing with the faces! Isn’t it cute how the polka dots on the ribbon make little ears on the faces? The sentiment is from Stampendous. The embossed paper was created with a Cuddlebug folder.

Finally, here’s one for us girls! I was inspired by a card in the Cricut magazine. Its been so cold, I need to dream of spring a little. This one almost tastes like juicy, ripe spring fruit! I love, love, love these patterned papers! The embossing was done with a Cuddlebug folder. The cherries are cut with a circle punch on top of the smallest Spellbinders Lacey Circles diecuts. The little leaves at the top of the cherries were made by trimming a couple petals off a flower punch!

All you need is love…

It’s almost February, so naturally I’m starting to think about love inspired cards. Here are a couple we’ve been working on and a couple odds and ends as well.

In keeping with trying new folds for cards from the Split Coast Stampers archives, I decided to try my hand at this side step card. http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/resources/tutorials/sidestepcard/   It was a lot of fun auditioning ideas for elements to sit on the ”steps”. The flower is a Martha Stewart pop up daisy punch, layered, then cut out with a Spellbinders circle die. The smaller flowers and butterfly are various punches. The lace border is a Martha Stewart Punch Around the Page and the medallion is a Spellbinders Lacey Circles die. I have a lot more ideas for this card pattern. My daughter, Heather has one in the works right now that is awesome! A great card for a guy. Stay tuned!

This one is Heather’s. Too bad the lighting is so poor in the first photo. It’s really super cute! This was a featured project at our latest Stamping Night Out get-together with my stamping friends and coworkers. Our wonderful, multi-talented friend Sara provided supplies and instruction and my fabulous friend Gail inspired us!

Here is my ”not a card” item of the week. It’s a ‘box in a bag’ from a tutorial at Split Coast Stampers. The focal is a medallion made with a Martha Stewart corner punch and various flower punches. Fun paper, huh? Feels like spring! (At least on the card. Everything’s still frozen solid outside!)

None of us love to make sympathy cards but unfortunately we all need them sometimes. Two friends from my youth just lost one of their parents so I made this for one of them. The rose was embossed and then carefully bleached with a cotton swab. The embossing acts as a resist. The music paper was a printable but unfortunately, I can’t find the source. 😦 The background paper is from a discontinued wallpaper book! It added a rich color to the feeling of the card.

Finally, here’s a quick and rather simply dressed swing card from a Split Coast Stampers tutorial. http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/resources/tutorials/swing_flip_flop_card/ The buttons are from punches. Aren’t they cute? I tied a few of them with embroidery floss as an accent.

Freebie Friday (almost)

Well, I mentioned in a previous post that my daughter might just have a surprise for you. Well, the surprise was supposed to be ”Freebie Friday” but we got a little swamped trying to finish challenge cards so we’ll just have to have ”Freebie Saturday” this week. It just doesn’t have the same ring to it now, does it? Oh well! Perhaps you saw the lovely 3-D vintage elements on the cards in my first challenge card post? My daughter finds vintage images in the public domain, cleans them up digitally, prints them, cuts them out, glitters them up, and layers them with dimensionals. She wanted to share the images from her original 3-D elements seen on this week’s cards plus a few extra. She’ll try to offer an image or a few every Friday, if possible!

To save these, right click on the image and choose ‘save’. Resize them to the size you want. Enjoy!

Easel Cards

My daughter and I have been busy finishing up our easel cards! The easel card directions can be found at Split Coast Stampers. http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/resources/tutorials/easelcard/ They were so much fun to make!

This is my daughter’s card for a winter birthday. Isn’t it pretty? She made the large and medium snowflakes using a Martha Stewart corner punch from a ‘punch around the page’ set. If you’re interested in the technique, let me know and she might do a tutorial. The center of the snowflake was embossed with a Cuttlebug folder, trimmed, and then brushed with a Studio G small inkpad to add color to the embossing. The small snowflakes are a Martha Stewart punch and Sizzix die. The sentiment is a digi from Create with TLC. She used a Gelly Roll pen to add shimmer and highlight to the word ”wishes”. Look at all the challenges she was able to enter with this card! Wow!

Our Blue Challenge Cards

We’ve been having a blast with the challenges! We wanted to make some cards with fun, unusual folds for the ”Use Blue” Challenge at Little Scrap Pieces! http://littlescrappieces.blogspot.com/ It’s also entered in My Mum’s Craft Shop ”Flowers” challenge: http://mymumscraftshopchallenges.blogspot.com/2012/01/challenge-41-flowers.html and the Digi Doodles ”anything goes” challenge: http://digidoodleshopsbest.blogspot.com/2012/01/challenge-92-anything-goes_26.html

Here is my card. I believe the beautiful digi of vintage children is from Paulette at Create with TLC. I can’t recall the name of this type of card but I’ll update this post as I come across it. I love the way it swings open so the focal image can be seen on the inside and the outside!

My daughter also took part in the Little Scrap Pieces ”Use Blue” Challenge. Her card is the ‘Triangle Trifold’ card from Split Coast Stampers. I love how this one opens as well. The medallion was impressed with a Cuttlebug folder and then cut out with the Lacey Circles Spellbinders die. This is also an entry in the FBC 80 ”Brr Snow/Winter” Challenge: http://freshbreweddesigns.blogspot.com/2012/01/fbc-80-plus-more-news-d.html  and in My Mum’s Craft Shop ”Flowers” challenge: http://mymumscraftshopchallenges.blogspot.com/2012/01/challenge-41-flowers.html She also entered it in Digi Doodles’ challenge ”anything goes”:  http://digidoodleshopsbest.blogspot.com/2012/01/challenge-92-anything-goes_26.html

We’ve got a few more cards in the works so check back in later for new cards and -maybe- a little surprise for you!

Challenge Cards!

My daughter and I decided to enter the CPS challenge for the first time this week! If you’re not familiar with CPS sketches, they are a great way to design cards! Basically, a CPS sketch is a simple, black and white layout for the general placement and shape of the elements on a card. You can use these sketches as a jumping off point for design, putting your own tweaks and spin on it as you like. The CPS blog (the link is on the right side of my blog) has over 250 CPS sketches and hosts a weekly challenge to create a card using the sketch of the week. I recently bought the book ”Cardmaker’s Sketchbook”, edited by Tanya Fox and highly recommend it. It has more than 200 additional CPS sketches and examples!

The following cards were all made using CPS sketch 252. Check it out at: http://cardpositioningsystems.blogspot.com/2012/01/cps-252-part-1.html  Luckily, we were able to combine several challenges with these cards!

This card uses some 3-D elements made by my daughter. I love the sparkle! This card is also an entry in the Make My Monday Challenge: Flowers and Leaves. Find the challenge at http://mimchallegeblog.blogspot.com/2012/01/mmm-week-33.html

The card features dry embossing in the background and oval medallion so it is part of the  2 Sisters Challenge: Embossing. http://2sisterschallengeblog.blogspot.com/2012/01/challenge-75-embossing.html

With the pink and white color scheme, I thought it also fits the bill for the Just Us Girls Color Challenge #120: Red, White, and Pink. http://justusgirlschallenge.blogspot.com/2012/01/just-us-girls-color-challenge-120.html

This is an entry in My Mums Craft Shop ”Flowers” challenge: http://mymumscraftshopchallenges.blogspot.com/2012/01/challenge-41-flowers.html

PaperCrafting Journey also has a floral challenge: http://paper-craftingjourney.blogspot.com/2012/01/pcj-challenge-1-floral.html

With the rose and dragonfly, this had to be part of the ”decoupage” challenge at http://creationsbygillm.blogspot.com/2012/01/cbgm-challenge-1-for-2012.html

Additionally, this card is an entry in the Sentimental Sundays Challenge: Use a diecut! Check it out here: http://sentimentalsundays.blogspot.com/2012/01/challenge-86-die-cuts.html

I used a new technique on this card. The side panels with the vine pattern use a resist stamping technique. Stamp and emboss the image. Lightly coat the paper with white acrylic paint, using a sponge brush or wide paint brush then gently wipe the paint off the embossing with a paper towel moistened with window cleaner. I like how it gave the card a kind of whitewashed look! With this embossing resist and the dry embossing on the medallion, I’m also entering this card in the 2 Sisters Embossing Challenge.

This card is also an entry into the Paper Take Weekly Challenge at http://papertakeweekly.blogspot.com This week’s theme is Buttons, Bows, Bling & Blooms and you can use any or all of those elements. This card has a bow and bling on the butterfly wings!

Additionally, I’m entering this card in the Whimsical Designs ”Anything Goes” challenge: http://www.whimsical-designs.com/2012/01/anything-goes-whimsical-wednesday.html

This is my daughter’s interpretation. She used a Gelly Roll pen to add shimmer to the patterned paper. The sentiment is another great digi stamp by Paulette at Create with TLC. Love the dragonfly! She has also entered this card in the Sentimental Sundays Challenge: Diecuts and the 2 Sisters Embossing Challenge and in My Mums Craft Shop ”Flowers” challenge: http://mymumscraftshopchallenges.blogspot.com/2012/01/challenge-41-flowers.html .  Also, this had to be entered in the ”decoupage” challenge at http://creationsbygillm.blogspot.com/2012/01/cbgm-challenge-1-for-2012.html  and the floral challenge at PaperCrafting Journey: http://paper-craftingjourney.blogspot.com/2012/01/pcj-challenge-1-floral.html

I hope you’ll give the CPS sketches a try and maybe join me in next week’s challenges!
